Pat's Art
Cartoons:
Pat's cartoons speak to us with an immediacy which comes from her own participation in the events depicted. They've a point to make. Hers! She uses them to focus us on issues; to enlist our sympathy. As can be seen from her work, she is particularly successful in achieving her goal.
Her sense of the humour, either visual or textual (often both), is always in evidence and as such is a powerful weapon in her objective of engaging our interest and support; the complexity of her dual task disguised by its accessibility.
Her special insight into the human condition enables her to highlight both the farcical and serious content in a given circumstance, conveying them equally powerfully.
Witness her ability, initially, to make us laugh at her portrayal of a hospital situation yet also
be aware of the undertone of the patient's pain and suffering, as well as the caring ministrations of the nurses and doctors.
She is savage in her portrayal of hierarchical figures, petty tyrants and bureaucrats exercising their momentary authority at the expense of people suffering the repercussions of war or illness. Humour, however, being her chosen medium for pointing the finger and holding these people to account.
As her gallery of cartoons make vividly clear, Pat possessed to the full, the ability to make us laugh and care simultaneously. Enjoy them and be moved!
